Cedric Villani, 37 years old, now Head of the Henri Poincare Institute , has been awarded the Fields Medal, the highest distinction a mathematician could hope for. He was student at LLG in “classes preparatoires” from 1990 to 1992 and after that entered the ENS at Paris.
Villani’s research is at the crossroads between analysis, probabilities, statistical physics and more recently differential geometry. He has particularly studied the kinetic theory of the Boltzmann equation and the optimal transportation. He is the author of “Topics in Optimal Transportation” (2003) and “Optimal Transport, Old and New” (2008).
